The succeeding nine Gurus nurtured, developed and preached Guru Nanak's ideas and teachings.
Right from Guru Nanak's childhood, his keen mind would not accept all the groundless rituals, superstitions and dogmas which passed for religion in those days.
Guru Nanak and the nine Gurus, who succeeded him, set a wonderful example of living spiritually, while yet taking an active part in the world.
Guru Nanak took with him as his companions a Muslim musician Mardana Ji and a Hindu peasant Bhai Bala ji and they went preaching from village to village.
Guru Ji composed his sermons in ragas(musical modes) which were sung along with the Rabab(lute style instrument of Mardana Ji).
Guru Ji's teachings inspired the people and within a few years these disciples became a homogeneous group whose faith was exclusively the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Guru ji travelled all over India. He also went to Sri Lanka, Tibet and Arabia(Mecca and Madina).
Whereever he went, he sang his hymns which told the people that if they wanted to love God they should learn first to love each other.
