Every Sikh man suffix SINGH with his name and every Sikh woman suffix KAUR with her name.
The meaning of Singh is 'Lion' and meaning of Kaur is 'Princess'.
This custom was first introduced in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, when he founded khalsa.
All female Sikhs were asked to use the name Kaur after their forename and males were asked to use the name Singh.
Guru Gobind Singh ji's motive behind this was to standardize the naming system independent of caste or family background.
Even the name 'Kaur' confirmed the equality of both genders, as was the tradition set by the founder of sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev ji.
Guru Gobind Singh ji gave equal respect to women as of men.
Kaur provides Sikh women with the status equal to men.
It gave women a lot of self-respect.
Sikhs has been given special identity in the world. Singh and Kaur are part of this identity.
Classifying all Sikh males as Singh and all females as Kaur signify that all humans are equal and no discrimination should be done in any aspect.
This also reinforces that all Sikhs are sovereigns under God.
Sikhs are glad to have these titles given by their Guru. Sikhs feel honoured when they are called as Singh and Kaur.
Around the globe whereever the Sikhs are present they are recognized by these titles.
